Dec 4

Last Friday, the day after Thanksgiving (a.k.a. “Black Friday”),
Heather and I observed national “Buy Nothing Day.”
We postponed our holiday shopping spree til Saturday when we
went to Target and found great deals on a wide assortment of
LED holiday lights — we bought a 66-foot string for $20.

I also discovered energy- and comfort-saving insulated draperies
that keep out light and keep in warmth during the cold winter months.

We haven’t made this purchase yet, but it’s on my list
now. I just took a quick look at Target.com and found another
great product — outdoor holiday lighting powered by a mini solar
panel. Solar holiday lighting at a fairly reasonable price!

Please do your part this holiday season and celebrate with energy
savings in mind. Save a lump of coal or ten!
(remember — every kilowatt hour saved is one less pound of coal).

Friends,Today, I wandered into my local Sears Outlet Store (a.k.a. “scratch and dent”) to see what kind of deals I might find on a new energy efficient refrigerator (my next big energy saving step).  I was pleasantly surprised to find lots and lots of brand new, Energy Star-rated refrigerators, clothes washers and driers, televisions, and other electronics and appliances.  These products are marked down 20% to 60% off department store retail prices.  For example, I found a fridge that uses less than 370 kilowatt hours per year to operate (a kilowatt-sipper), on sale for $467, BRAND NEW.  I could not find the scratch nor the dent.  I don’t have the cash to make the purchase yet, but with the energy (and dollar) savings potential compared to my current 1989 model, I’d be a fool to wait too much longer.

Even better, Sears Outlets are having a sale through September 16 (no, Sears did not pay me to say this!), so the discounts are even greater!

Find your local Sears Outlet store by clicking on http://www.SearsOutlet.com, and then go save on your energy saving purchases.

By the way, I walked out of the store with nothing more than a $20 blender, so I can charge myself up daily with green smoothies.

All the best, and happy Labor Day weekend!

Tuesday March 31 is a big day for Kilowatt Ours.  I am thrilled that our team, led by Dan Joranko, knocked on 1,000 doors in East Nashville’s delightfully cozy Inglewood neighborhood inviting folks to attend a film screening and home energy savings workshop at Dalewood United Methodist Church (2300 Ridgecrest Dr).  Doors open at 7pm.

I believe door-to-door outreach and neighborhood organizing are vital to the success of the green movement.  There is no better way to make a difference than to knock on doors.  We will put my belief to the test at our Neighborhoods Initiative kickoff!

We plan to spend the next several months in Inglewood working with homeowners to achieve significant energy savings while building block leaders.  As our success proves itself, we will expand the program across Nashville and America.

Also, check out the new short video I have posted on YouTube about our neighborhood organizing.  Dan Joranko and several volunteers knocked on hundreds of doors in Inglewood, organizing the old-fashioned way.  Last weekend my daugther Lily and I joined Dan and Gretchen Hagle of Kilowatt Ours to canvas the neighborhood.  Please comment and share on my latest short:  KO Neighborhood Canvas

$168 billion in utility bill savings for American consumers and businesses

222,000 permanent jobs in construction and other fields

390 new power plants not constructed

A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking

48 million cars off the road in 2020

These are just some of the benefits we will ALL enjoy if a national energy efficiency resource standard (EERS) is implemented to reduce electricity demand by 15 percent and natural gas demand by 10 percent by 2020.

Thanks in part to a $15,000 grant from the Energy Foundation, Kilowatt Ours is part of The Campaign for Energy Efficient America coalition advocating for a national EERS.  You can learn more about EERS by clicking here.

EERS is one of our top priorities in 2009 and Kilowatt Ours will be engaged in the following activities to support this effort: presenting Kilowatt Ours and information about the EERS at congressional district offices, coordinating hundreds of screenings of Kilowatt Ours to gain public support for the EERS, securing media exposure for this initiative.

Here is how you can help:

  1. Please ask your business or organization to sign the position statement found here.  You can find list of organizations who have already signed here.  Please email Gretchen /at/ KilowattOurs.org to add your organization the list.
  2. Please host a screening in your town.  You can host a screening for the community, or host a screening at the district office of your congressman or congresswoman.   No experience necessary and we’ll provide all the materials you need to succeed.  Please email Gretchen /at/ KilowattOurs.org for more information.
  3. Click here to contact your Congressperson and Senator and ask them to support a national Energy Efficiency Resource Standard.

If you are interested in these opportunities to save money and make your world a better place, please contact Gretchen /at/ KilowattOurs.org today.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Jeff Barrie

I welcome your comments on my first video blog.  This short, 2-minute video tells the story of my recent date with my wife Heather.  We had a blast and didn’t spend a dime on gasoline.

Check out the video, and please comment.
